About Me

Assistant Professor FCT-UNL

I am an Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT-UNL). I lecture Entrepreneurship, Decision Models, Digital Ecosystems, Information Systems, Project Management, and Engineering Economics in Master, Doctorate or Postgraduate study courses.

I am also a member of the Board of Directors of UNIDEMI - Research and Development Unit in Mechanical & Industrial Engineering (UNIDEMI), in FCT-UNL. UNIDEMI integrates 85 researchers: 30 are integrated Research Members and 55 are collaborators. In the last evaluation process UNIDEMI got a VERY GOOD evaluation from the FCT review panel (2015-2020)

My research interests are related with Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Strategy and Business Models in Digital Platforms; and Business Interoperability in Industrial and Service Ecosystems.

I have published over 90 publications, (see details in the following indexed databases: Orcid.org/0000-0002-6045-9994; ResearcherID: A-5091-2013; Scopus Author ID: 35793121600; Google Scholar). I have acted has Guest Editor in several scientific journals, e.g. Computers in Industry, Automation in Construction or Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing. I have over 18 years of experience in Research and Development projects, at the national and EU level.

Whenever possible, I like to engage my students in research projects and entrepreneurship contests and challenges in which I had some successful cases, such the EGGY.

Projects

DIGISTART

Support Ecosystems for Digital Startups

The project DIGISTART aims to provide a supporting European-Wide ecosystem for helping Web Entrepreneurs especially University Students navigate through the challenges of supporting and connecting them to the right resources. It aims to build a supporting ecosystem of innovation activities that would harness the capabilities of the largest European online platform for startups and web entrepreneurs: F6S, to deliver an enhanced web-based platform.

It aims to bring about increased networking and coordination between the various business accelerators, investors, mentors across Europe to coordinate their activities to reach a much wider audience. It further helps to support the academic and research community by proposing academic curriculum to imbibe entrepreneurship skills to university students and to develop Business Analytical Tools that can help digital startups optimize their business models and pricing decisions.

SEMANTIK

Semantic Web standards for Competitive and Business Intelligence

SEMANTIK aims to bring Semantic Web standards to the internal Competitive Intelligence and Business Intelligence activities. Searching web sources and normalizing data to internal databases and ontologies that later are processed to bring up-to-date and reliable insights about the business environment:

  • Creation of integrated models of models and approaches of Intellectual Capital, the Strategic Foresight and Knowledge Management organizations.
  • Creation of a meta- model based on ontology and folksonomy development of Business.
  • Development of an aggregating platform semantic information based on research and web crawlers (Radian6 , Google , SM2 , etc.) engine that lets you search information taking into account linguistic differences
  • Interface with the extremely intuitive and user friendly in terms of research and in terms of output results SEMANTIK vision is to change the way companies use web sources to support decision-making.

3i Building

Intelligent, Interactive and Immersive Buildings

It aims to develop a management tool targeted for complex urban infrastructures (hospitals, shopping centers, airports, etc.), capable of capturing a large volume of data generated inside and in real time through "things" sensors (equipment, spaces, objects, etc.) and people (opinions, levels of satisfaction, comfort, etc.).

Beyond communication "building - management center" and "users - management center", achieved through the application of concepts Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Internet of People (IoP)), the project aims to integrate the state of the art scientific body Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and gamification in order to extend the dialogue and make it bidirectional.

Business Interoperability for Collaborative Platforms

with Axiomatic Design Theory for Lean, Agile, Resilient and Green Industrial Ecosystems

Business Interoperability for Collaborative Platforms with Axiomatic Design Theory for Lean, Agile, Resilient and Green Industrial Ecosystems (BI-LARG-IE) research aim is to develop a methodology to enable the detailed design of ICT-based platforms that are able to deliver high levels of Business Interoperability.

The design methodology for Business Interoperability platforms will be grounded on the Axiomatic Design Theory that will provide a solid theoretical background. Systems dynamics will be used to analyze how different options in the eight Business Interoperability Parameters may impact the BIQMM and the overall performance regarding the ability to design and produce products in a lean, agile, resilient and green supply chain / ecosystem. Case studies in the automotive/manufacturing sectors and architecture, engineering and construction sectors will be conducted.
